Synthetic Underlayment vs Felt for NH Roofs

· New Hampshire exteriors

Felt still works when installed right. Synthetic sheets tear less and hold up better if the roof is open through a New England weather delay.

Felt

  • Lower material cost
  • Familiar to many crews
  • Can wrinkle and tear when wet or walked hard

Synthetic

  • Higher tear strength
  • Better temporary weather resistance
  • Often lighter rolls — faster coverage

Still required either way

Ice & water at eaves and valleys is separate from field underlayment. Do not let a cheap underlayment line hide missing ice membrane.
