Kick-Out Flashing at Roof-to-Wall Joints in NH

· New Hampshire exteriors

Where a roof dumps into a wall, water needs a kick-out to leave the building — not run behind siding. Missing kick-outs are a top cause of wall rot in freeze–thaw country.

What kick-out flashing does

At the bottom of a roof-to-wall junction, kick-out flashing turns water out into the gutter or away from the wall face.

Without it, melt water and rain follow the sidewall into the wall cavity — especially on north and east walls that stay wet longer.

Signs it is missing or failed

  • Soft or stained siding below a lower roof edge
  • Peeling paint on trim at the roof-to-wall corner
  • Interior stains on the wall below a intersecting roof
  • Caulk blobs where metal kick-out should be

Fix it with the right trade open

Roof replacement is the cleanest time to install proper step and kick-out flash tied into ice & water.

Siding replacement can expose and correct missing kick-outs — we coordinate so one trade does not bury the other's mistake.
