Frozen Gutters and Ice Dams: Connected Problems

· New Hampshire exteriors

A gutter packed with ice cannot take melt water. Overflow freezes on the fascia and feeds the dam at the eave — a loop that repeats every thaw.

The loop

Warm attic melts snow → water runs to cold eaves → ice dam forms → gutters freeze solid → more overflow behind siding.

Clearing gutters in fall helps; it does not replace ice membrane and ventilation on the roof.

Heat cables — limited role

Cables can keep a temporary channel open. They use electricity, can fail, and do not fix heat loss into the attic.

We discuss cables as a band-aid when a full roof scope is months away — not as the permanent plan.

Lasting fixes

  • Ice & water at eaves and valleys
  • Balanced soffit and ridge ventilation
  • Sound drip edge and fascia
  • Gutter pitch and capacity matched to the roof
